Juan graduated with honors from the Choreomundus program in 2017. Juan holds a bachelor in musicology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and a Ph.D. in telecommunications from the same institution. His research methodology combines methods from engineering with anthropology of dance, ethnochoreology and philosophy. Juan is particularly interested in the potential of semiotics to approach the complexity of analysis and synthesis in conducting fieldwork-based research in dance. As an artist, Juan specializes in the step dance Afro-Peruvian "zapateo", and in Afro-Peruvian music-dance expressions in general. He has held workshops and seminars in Peru, Guatemala and Bolivia; and is currently exploring the common grounds of Zapateo and the Afro-Brazilian art Capoeira.
