Performance Review By: Brian Jay de Lima Ambulo (Philippines) On 17th of October 2015 at Móra Ferenc Museum, Szeged - Hungary, a collaborative performance between members of Choreomundus cohort 3 took place. “There can be no bond stronger than that between a mother and child. Her love is the sunshine and rain that nurtures her little sapling. Devastation follows, if her sapling is uprooted, leaving her destitute.” The variety of the performance is a result of the variety of the performers – a successful artistic and imaginative collaboration coming from different parts of the world. Maa, What If… is an exploration and (re)interpretation on the chosen literary pieces of the celebrated Bengali poet, Rabindranath Tagore. Centering on Tagore’s works Clouds and Waves, The Champa Flower, and Debotar Grash, the artists were inspired between the relationship of a gracious, loving mother and her playful, curious, endearing child. The performance, in my experience, is a meditational journey, taking me from the divine and magnetising singing of Sekar Sari (Indonesia) and Mariann Hévizi, accompanied by equally absorbing music from Borbás Gábor, Kornel Zenei, Zoltán Lázár, Istvan Jenei, Zoltán Kádár, and Janos Belovai, (Hungary); to the pure and expressive movements of Ipshita Rajesh (India), to the powerful dancing of Soultari Amin Farid (Singapore). Ipshita and Amin exposed what their bodies are superior at, harmonising and balancing, without overshadowing each other. The employment of music, movement, and speech is a load, but it is as complex as it is riveting. It tickles the senses and touches the heart; a definite must-experience to those longing for multidisciplinary performances!
